Translated literally: Poop the nails. Never would I imagine that in the first week
of a year-long stay in the Netherlands I would have so many introductions to
various Dutch traditions. I’ve had some
amazing traditional Dutch food, learned multiple Dutch phrases (mostly food!),
but most memorably, I pooped a nail! Let
me explain: this is a traditional Dutch game where there is a bottle on the
ground and a nail tied on a string, tied around your waste. The nail is hanging behind you; you patiently
and strategically get the nail to go into the bottle while squatting. So it’s like you’re pooping a nail! If you’ve ever been to China, you can really
imagine what this would be like, although you don’t have to squat as much to
poop a nail! ;) At first, I was like you: thinking “Are you
kidding me?!” “You expect ME…to do
THAT?!” But oh yes! I promised myself I would try everything at
least once. And I did successfully poop
the nail! And I must say: I was pretty
good! I even figured out some strategy
to it! There were other traditional
Dutch games at this church party for international students, but I think you
can understand how this one stood out the most!
So next time I see all of you in person, I’m gonna show you how to poop
the nail! J
